Reading 2: Western Civ (Austin Anderson)

A. The theme of the reading was showing how the tribes in Hella conformed and expanded throughout the land around them. This reading also was based around the emurgence of naval fleets. A strong navy was necessary when most wars began to be fought on the sea.

B. "And I am inclined to think was not as yet given to the whole country, and infact didn't exist before the time of Hellen." I found it interesting that during the times in this reading the country wasn't even known as Hellenes. When Hellen and his sons became powerful in Phthiotis, their aid was invoked by other countries, and those who assiociated with them were known as Hellenes.

C. The reading generated the idea that having a strong navy was vital at that time period, and that the sea was in the center of expansion and life. The sea was also used for evil and pirates also plundered villages on the shore. As Hellenes continued to expand, walled cities began to rise on the coast.

D. The reading mentioned that in older times Hellenes carried arms at all times for protection. Although people today don't carry guns around to protect themselves, many people own firearms to protect themselves from dangerous situations. People are still cautious today, but not as protective as back then.

E. This reading is yet another example of expansion in Western Civilization. Which seems to be a common theme in these opening chapters. The Hellenes are also in chapter 4 of our text books and are a major part of the history of Western Civilization.
